Fort Wayne’s mayoral race has expanded further with Stephanie Crandall, a longstanding member of late Mayor Tom Henry’s office and former City Council at-large candidate, joining the fray.
Crandall’s entry into the Allen County Democratic Party caucus brings the total number of candidates to at least seven, following the vacancy left by Henry’s passing.
Having worked closely with Mayor Henry for nearly 11 years, Crandall currently holds the position of director of intergovernmental affairs for Fort Wayne. Reflecting on Henry’s tenure, she acknowledged the challenges of the role but expressed confidence in her ability to carry on his vision for the city.
With a career deeply rooted in local governance and experience at various government levels, Crandall believes she is well-equipped to continue the initiatives Henry set in motion.
While Crandall’s bid for City Council at-large in the 2023 general election was unsuccessful, she emphasized Henry’s support for her political ambitions. Her decision to enter the mayoral race underscores her commitment to advancing Fort Wayne’s interests and realizing the late mayor’s aspirations.
The upcoming caucus, scheduled for April 20th at Parkview Field, will serve as a pivotal moment for Crandall and her fellow candidates. Prospective contenders have until April 17th to formally file for the caucus, signaling their intent to pursue the mayoral nomination.
As the race intensifies, residents will have the opportunity to engage with the candidates during a town hall event on April 18th at Franklin School Park.
Crandall joins a diverse pool of candidates vying for the mayoral seat, including City Councilwoman Michelle Chambers, D-at large; Jorge Fernandez, who contested the Democratic primary in 2023; Palermo Galindo, a former city and county candidate; Indiana House Minority Leader Phil GiaQuinta; Wayne Township Trustee Austin Knox; and City Councilwoman Sharon Tucker, D-6th.
With the mayoral election drawing near, the competition promises to be spirited as each candidate presents their vision for Fort Wayne’s future.
