According to a report in the Lafayette Journal & Courier, Tragedy struck the Tippecanoe County Jail this week as two inmates, Troy Pownell and Tameka Luckett, passed away under separate circumstances, prompting investigations by local authorities.

The sequence of events began when jail officers discovered Pownell, 38, in distress in his cell on Monday. According to reports from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, Pownell, a resident of the Rhineland Trailer Park in Delphi, complained of abdominal pain and dizziness before collapsing.

Despite immediate medical attention and transportation to Franciscan East Hospital, Pownell succumbed to his condition on Tuesday evening.

Initial investigations have not revealed any apparent signs of injury or trauma on Pownell’s body, and the precise cause of his illness remains undetermined pending the results of toxicology reports, which typically take up to eight weeks to process.

Coinciding with Pownell’s tragic demise, inmate Tameka Luckett, 45, was found unresponsive in her cell early Monday morning. Despite efforts to revive her, Luckett, a resident of West Lafayette, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Similar to Pownell’s case, initial examinations did not uncover any signs of physical harm, with the exact cause of her passing awaiting toxicology analysis.

The circumstances surrounding these deaths have prompted investigations by both the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police. Notably, Luckett’s arrest stemmed from a prior incident in which she was found unresponsive at her apartment.

Subsequent events, including the discovery of another unresponsive individual and indications of drug use, led to her arrest on suspicion of various drug-related charges.
