According to a report in the Lafayette Journal & Courier, the resignation of former West Lafayette police officer Jake Forgey in February has led to the dismissal of 51 cases due to discrepancies between his written reports and body-worn camera footage. Forgey’s misrepresentation and embellishment in his reports tainted the cases he was involved in, prompting their dismissal.
Documents provided by the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Forgey’s resignation resulted in the dismissal of 38 misdemeanor charges, 12 felony charges, and one traffic citation. Most of the cases affected were related to drunken or impaired driving, while others included resisting and drug possession charges.
Prosecutor Patrick Harrington refrained from commenting on Forgey or the dismissals but previously emphasized the thoroughness of the review process. He acknowledged the department’s decision to dismiss cases where Forgey was actively involved in the investigation, attributing it to Chief Troy Harris’s request to review body camera footage.
The released tally of dismissed cases may only scratch the surface, as Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jason Bliss hinted at additional cases not included in the list under current diversion agreements, which will also be dismissed.
Forgey, who previously worked as a dispatcher before joining the police force in June 2022, faced criticism from Chief Harris following his resignation. Harris emphasized that Forgey’s behavior did not align with community expectations and expressed the department’s reluctance to undergo such scrutiny.
The aftermath of Forgey’s resignation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies. As investigations continue and more cases are reviewed, the impact of his actions on the criminal justice system becomes increasingly evident.
