According to a Probable Cause Affidavit obtained by Terre Haute Vice News, the Terre Haute Police Department reported using pepper spray and K9 Vader in order to apprehend 55-year-old Jay Snyder.
The incident is reported to have occurred at the Woodridge Motel on June 28th, at approximately 6:30PM. That is when THPD officers Plasse and Lawson arrived at the motel in response to a disturbance reported by motel staff. According to the report, a vehicle in the parking lot was registered to Snyder who had an outstanding felony warrant.
Officers attempted to make contact with Snyder who refused to respond. Fearing the suspect was experiencing a medical emergency, Plasse and Lawson made forcible entry into the room where they identified Snyder and believed he was reaching for an object that could have been a weapon.

After retreating to a secure position and calling for backup, officers Hayne and Knopp arrived on scene and attempted to force Snyder out of the room using pepper balls and then OC/CS pepper spray. When those methods proved ineffective, Knopp deployed K9 Vader into the room.
According to testimony from multiple officers at the scene, Snyder was verbally aggressive towards them, and was hitting and biting K9 Vader. In their attempts to subdue him they reported repeatedly striking him in the face, and using a baton to strike his legs.
Once in handcuffs, Snyder was transported to Union Hospital due to injuries received from dog bites which required surgery. Snyder was then booked into the jail on July 3rd and is currently being held on a $25,000 bond awaiting his initial hearing on July 10th.
THVN is requesting body camera footage from the arrest.
