According to a report in the Louisville Courier Journal, former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel plead guilty to 27 counts of theft and official misconduct. The plea deal comes nine months after he initially denied the charges.
Judge Larry Medlock accepted Noel’s plea but indicated that he would need to hear from victims of the alleged crimes before determining a sentence. Noel could face up to 15 years in prison and three years of probation. A new sentencing hearing has not been scheduled.
The state alleged that Noel used funds from the New Chapel Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to purchase personal items. He was also accused of assigning county employees to work on his personal properties.
Noel’s wife, Misty, and daughter, Kasey, are also facing charges related to the case. Both have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled for trial on October 28.
Clark County council members John Miller and Brittney Ferree are also facing charges related to the case. They are accused of voting in favor of funding appropriations for the EMS while receiving personal benefits. Both pleaded not guilty and posted bond.
In addition to the criminal charges, Noel is facing several civil lawsuits. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is suing him to recover funds allegedly misappropriated from the New Chapel EMS. His brother’s children are also suing him for allegedly shorting them their inheritance.
