According to a report from WANE 15, The Indiana State Police (ISP) are facing significant challenges in their transition from Dodge Chargers to Dodge Durango SUVs, as a mechanical issue has sidelined a substantial portion of the new fleet. A defect in the oil cooler of the Durangos has forced 39 of the 219 vehicles in service off the road, with more expected to follow.

The issue requires extensive engine repairs or replacements, leaving the vehicles out of service for four to eight weeks. ISP Superintendent Doug Carter voiced frustration over the situation, calling it a major setback. “We’re sidelining brand-new vehicles, and it’s the taxpayers who are shortchanged,” Carter said.

Each fully equipped Durango costs ISP about $50,000. With over 500 Durangos ordered, the department anticipates more vehicles will suffer the same mechanical failure, creating logistical challenges. Troopers are being forced to rotate between pool cars, impacting operational efficiency.

The issue has been reported statewide, including at ISP’s Fort Wayne post and the Allen County Sheriff’s Department. While some agencies have not yet experienced problems, they are closely monitoring their Durangos.
