According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, Republican U.S. Senator Mike Braun’s campaign faced backlash after releasing a TV ad containing a doctored image of his Democratic opponent, Jennifer McCormick, and her supporters.

The ad falsely depicted the crowd holding signs reading “no gas stoves” and accused McCormick of wanting to ban gas stoves. In reality, the original image, taken by the South Bend Tribune, showed only McCormick campaign signs.

Braun’s campaign quickly replaced the ad with a version including a disclaimer, acknowledging that the image had been altered. This adjustment was made to comply with a new Indiana law, signed by Governor Eric Holcomb in March, which mandates disclaimers on digitally altered political ads.

The controversy prompted McCormick to respond on social media, dismissing the focus on stoves and emphasizing her priorities, such as women’s reproductive rights, education, and jobs. Braun’s campaign claimed the ad’s earlier version was shared by mistake, while also accusing McCormick of altering Braun’s appearance in her ads.

Both candidates will meet in two upcoming debates, with the election drawing closer. Early voting starts on October 8, and Election Day is November 5.
