According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, officer Logan Westerfield of the Plainfield Police Department resigned after an internal investigation into a fatal car chase on August 30, which led to the deaths of 80-year-old Bennie “Joe” Williams and his 78-year-old wife, Barbara “Barb” Williams.

The elderly couple was struck by Westerfield’s police SUV while turning left onto U.S. 40 from Smith Road. Westerfield, chasing a suspected impaired driver, ran a red light at 57 mph, colliding with the couple’s vehicle. Although he attempted to brake and swerve, it was too late. The Williamses died at the scene.

Westerfield, a five-year veteran, was pursuing a white Kia K5 believed to contain drug users, including one unconscious passenger. Dashcam footage and data from the crash indicated that Westerfield was traveling nearly 100 mph.

Witnesses initially reported that Westerfield’s siren was off, but later footage confirmed it was on, though at high speeds there is little time for local traffic to react.

The Avon Police Department led the investigation, determining that Westerfield did not approach the intersection with sufficient caution. The internal investigation by Plainfield Police was completed without releasing detailed findings. Westerfield resigned after its conclusion.

The suspect, Bryan Goodmon, who was driving the Kia, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement resulting in death and injury. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for November 26. Joe and Barb Williams, who were married for nearly 58 years, left behind a large family, including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
