It was standing room only last night for Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith’s town hall at the Vigo County Annex. Several residents asked questions, and a few critics voiced concerns about his policies, and public statements.
The first question came from a woman who Beckwith playfully referred to as “Cassie” before she asked about the recent firing of Erin Sheridan, a senior advisor on his staff, and accusations that some of his staff had viewed pornographic material while in his office at the statehouse.
Beckwith replied that Sheridan had been let go because there was, “no longer a need for her position,” and that he had just been made aware of the accusations involving pornographic material “this weekend,” that his office found no evidence, and that they were just baseless allegations.
According to Raw Story, the complaints centered around Beckwith’s deputy chief of staff Gregg Puls and statehouse attorney Devin Norrick allegedly watching a video of a state legislator’s wife made to appear topless by Artificial Intelligence.
The next series of questions came from representatives of Concerned Citizens against Wabash Valley Resources, and revolved around Beckwith’s opinion regarding plans to sequester carbon in Vigo and Vermillion county.
Beckwith responded that he is a firm opponent of Eminent Domain and that he supported the Trump administrations recent decision to remove carbon dioxide from it’s list of EPA recognized pollutants.
A local resident concerned about the effects of poverty on Indiana, stated that, “Trump has declared war against the poor people of this country,” and questioned the recent decision to house ICE detainees at Camp Atterbury.
In response Beckwith stated that immigrants who entered the United States illegally did not have the right to due process. This comment brought a strong reaction from the crowd to which Beckwith replied that Japanese soldiers who bombed Pearl Harbor also did not deserve due process.
When pressed by the crowd about whether illegal immigration was a civil or criminal offense Beckwith argued that it was criminal, and asked if Russia invaded Alaska would their soldiers have the right to due process?
In response to criticisms of Trump Beckwith responded that he thought Donald Trump was doing a great job and would be remembered as one of the greatest presidents in human history because he is cleaning up the mess from the past four years.
Many other topics were discussed including autism, school vouchers, and rural health. The full town hall can be viewed on the Terre Haute Vice News facebook page.
