In a statement posted on Twitter, Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, announced that her department was partnering with Indiana Governor Mike Braun to open a new migrant detention center in Indiana called the “Speedway Slammer.”

According to WRTV, Molly Craft, a representative from the governor’s office, stated that the facility would be located near the Grissom Joint Air Reserve Base and the Miami Correctional Facility, and is expected to house 1,000 detainees.

This announcement comes just weeks after Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, revealed that Indiana’s Camp Atterbury would also be used to house migrants. It is unclear at this point whether the new facility will replace the need to use Atterbury or will be additional detention space.

It is also unclear who will run the new facility, but residents from around the state have expressed concerns about migrants being paid $1 a day to work in correctional facilities where they’re being detained.

According to ProPublica, the GEO Group, a $4 billion dollar private prison company that runs detention centers in the US, is back in court fighting a 2021 federal jury’s unanimous decision forcing the company to pay workers at least the minimum wage in their facilities.
