According to court records, the results of a forensic evaluation determining whether Shane Meehan’s competency restoration treatment was effective were received on August 15th, and placed under seal.
Meehan was arrested on July 7th, 2021 and is being charged with Premeditated Murder of a Federal Officer, Attempted Arson on Federal Property, and Use/Carry/Discharge of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence, Causing Death.
Meehan is accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at an FBI building in Terre Haute, and engaging in a shootout that resulted in the death of Terre Haute Police Department detective Greg Ferency.
In November of 2024, Meehan was found incompetent to stand trial. Federal judge James Hanlon stated that Meehan was likely suffering from a, “”serious mental disease or disaffect,” and that he should be hospitalized for a period not exceeding four months.
According to court records Meehan received his treatment at the Butner Federal Medical Center located approximately forty minutes northwest of Raleigh in North Carolina.
At a court hearing in March of this year, the government’s motion was granted to conduct an evaluation to determine Meehan’s sanity at the time of the offense, “if clinical staff deems the competency restoration process successful.”
During that hearing Meehan had argued that, “a sanity evaluation conducted on a patient who is incompetent would lack even a modicum of reliability.” The court ultimately determined that, “competency to stand trial and his sanity at the time of the offense are separate concepts.”
