Vigo County residents are still waiting on the results of an internal investigation conducted by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department concerning the misconduct of a deputy caught on body camera footage.
Three weeks ago, Terre Haute Vice News reported on an incident involving VCSD deputy Scott Brown, who was recorded shouting, “Let them all fucking die,” in response to individuals experiencing a drug overdose.
On September 29th, Sheriff Derek Fell posted to the VCSD Facebook page that the department would be conducting an “internal review” of the incident. It appears the results of that review have not yet been shared with the public.
During our investigation of the incident, court documents were discovered and witnesses came forward, showing that deputy Brown has a history of misconduct, with individuals claiming to have filed complaints, and at least one settlement being made for excessive force.
In August of 2019 a lawsuit was filed by a man claiming to have been followed home and physically assaulted by Brown for calling the Indiana State Police department to report him for harassment.
The complaint stated, “Deputy Brown became enraged, exclaimed ‘you son of a bitch’ and punched the [plaintiff] on the right side of his face… Deputy Brown continued to beat the [plaintiff] as another deputy approached and began to tase the [plaintiff]in the lower back.”
Court documents indicate a settlement was reached between the plaintiff and the defendants, which also included deputies Ryan Hartleroad, Chris Hawkins, Jerrad Pirtle, and the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department on September 13th, 2021.
