According to WFYI Indianapolis, students from Purdue University published a special edition of their newspaper the, Purdue Exponent, and distributed 3,000 copies to the campus of Indiana University.

Kyle Charters, publisher of the Exponent, stated that the act of solidarity was in response to IU’s decision to cancel print editions of their student newspaper the Indiana Daily Student.

A recent article posted on the Indiana Daily Student website, shared more details about the school’s attempts to censor the student paper, and to fire the IU Director of Student Media, Jim Rodenbush, after he refused to remove news from a special edition.

According to the IDS article, before the October 16th edition of the paper was to be published, “the Media School directed us to print no news in the paper, an order blatantly in defiance of our editorial independence and the Student Media Charter.”

Publisher of the Purdue Exponent, Kyle Charters, in an interview with WFYI, stated that, “Purdue students initially offered to print the now-cancelled special homecoming edition, but the IDS declined.”

“It understandably decided to turn us down,” Charters said. “I think out of fear … that there would be some further retribution from the school.” Instead the staff chose to write a special edition on the value of journalism and student media.
