According to multiple sources, Union Hospital has chosen Gemini Protection Services, which is reportedly owned by former Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman, to provide their security. And Jeff Stevens, a former Terre Haute Firefighter who retired during an investigation into his conduct, is managing security at the hospital for Gemini.
Stevens’ Facebook profile shows that he had worked for Professional Security Enterprises the company which had previously provided security for the hospital. THVN is waiting for a response from Union Hospital regarding the reasons for the change.
It’s a growing trend around the country for police officers to work security while off duty in their uniforms while using their patrol vehicles, and service weapons. Minneapolis recently commissioned a study to see if they can institute a fee to help recoup public funds.
Minneapolis city council member Robin Wonsley stated that, “City public works employees can’t take city trucks and go fill potholes after hours and get paid in cash for doing that, but that’s exactly what we’re doing with MPD.”
A 2023 Department of Justice investigation found that patrol officers were in charge of deciding whether their supervisors received opportunities for lucrative private security work, and that control directly undermined the ability of supervisors to hold those patrol officers accountable while on duty.
