According to a statement released by the Vigo County Sheriff’s department on their Facebook page, an inmate named Adam Bryant was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 12:59am on December 25th.
The statement went on to say, “Jail medical personnel tended to the unresponsive individual. Emergency services were immediately notified and responded to the scene.”
Jail staff are claiming Bryant was in a cell by himself, and medical staff determined that he was deceased on the scene. In a statement from the coroner’s office an autopsy was performed by Dr Kohr at 10 am on December 26th.
According to publicly available court records Bryant was being held on seven charges including criminal confinement and domestic battery. He was also scheduled to be evaluated for transfer to a local sober living facility.
Bryant is the fourth Vigo County jail inmate to have died in just over the past two years. Fred Whitlock died in custody on December 4th, 2020, William Myles died in custody on November 30th, 2021, and Danny Hicks died in custody on April 10th, 2022.
Many local residents have raised concerns about medical neglect at the Vigo County jail, and the Vigo County Jail Prisoner Solidarity Project has documented much of that alleged neglect on the Facebook page.
Terre Haute Vice News has submitted public records requests for the coroner’s report and for the probable cause affidavit in Bryant’s death.
