A daring early morning heist at the Hometown Savings Bank on July 21, 2023, sent shockwaves through Terre Haute as thieves made off with tens of thousands of dollars from an ATM. However, thanks to the combined efforts of the Terre Haute Police Department (THPD), Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, and multiple law enforcement agencies from neighboring states the three suspects from Texas were apprehended in Arkansas.
At approximately 06:11 a.m., THPD Uniform Officers responded to an ATM alarm at the Home Town Bank located on 1709 S 3rd St. Upon arrival, officers discovered significant damage to the ATM and found that its contents had been stolen, amounting to tens of thousands in cash.
Officers canvassed the area and soon came across an abandoned truck nearby, still connected to chains, which was later determined to have been reported stolen from West Terre Haute within the past hour. This critical piece of evidence provided an early lead for the investigation.
THPD Detectives, along with a Detective from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, initiated an investigation and sought help from witnesses who had valuable information to share. These leads allowed detectives to identify suspect vehicles and potential destinations, setting the stage for a cross-state operation to apprehend the criminals.
Over the course of a few hours, law enforcement agencies from multiple states, including the Missouri Highway Patrol, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in Arkansas, and the Arkansas State Police, collaborated to track down the suspects. The Missouri Highway Patrol successfully stopped and identified the occupants of one suspect vehicle, while the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department engaged in a vehicle pursuit with another suspect vehicle.
The pursuit culminated in a foot chase as the three occupants of the fleeing vehicle attempted to evade capture. However, officers caught up with them, and all the suspects were eventually apprehended.
The suspects were identified as Nicholas Da Von Ulloa, 27, of Houston, Texas; Destani S. Jackson, 23, of Humble, Texas; and Casia M. Baldwin, 22, also from Houston, Texas. Law enforcement officers found the driver of the vehicle in possession of a large amount of cash, which was just a few hundred dollars shy of the initial stolen amount.
Following their capture in Jackson County, Arkansas, approximately six hours after the heist in Terre Haute, the three suspects were taken into custody. They will now face charges in Vigo County for Burglary, Theft, Auto Theft, and Criminal Mischief.
THPD Detectives are working closely with the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office to expedite the filing of charges, after which the extradition process will begin to return the suspects to Indiana to face justice.
As the investigation continues, the Hometown Savings Bank expressed its gratitude for the quick response of law enforcement agencies, which ensured that customers’ funds were protected. Bank officials have reassured the public that additional security measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
