State youth boxing tournament coming to Terre Haute.

The USA Boxing Indiana Silver Gloves tournament is coming to Terre Haute, Indiana December 3rd. The Sweatbox Gym will be hosting the days events starting at 2pm, and will also have six student athletes competing in the tournament.

Those athletes include two former national champions in their weight classes. Shaun Schwartz is a student at Sarah Scott middle school, he’s ranked 4th in the nation, and will be competing in the 176+ division. And Noah Cuffle, a student at Otter Creek middle school, is currently ranked 7th in the 132 pound weight class.

Also competing from the Sweatbox are Cain Thompson, Michael Ramirez, Junior Morales, and JT Burnsides. By participating in this tournament fighters will have the opportunity to qualify for a regional tournament in Toledo, Ohio and a national tournament in Kansas City, Missouri.

Coach James Porter is proud of the work his athletes have put in and during our interview said that he loves seeing the difference boxing has made in the lives of the young men he coaches. One young man’s parents had even written a letter describing the improvement his teachers had seen in the classroom.

Porter has been coaching boxing at the Sweatbox for 25 years. The gym is currently located at 940 Poplar Street in Terre Haute, but started out at 1115 Wabash, then moved to the Terre Haute Fitness Center on Lafyette, and then a short period at 17th and Poplar.

Admission is $15 at the door and be sure to follow the Sweatbox Gym on Facebook to stay up to date on their upcoming activities.
