The Indiana State Police Department has denied requests for dash camera and body camera footage related to the arrest of Jakita Brown on March 9th, 2026.

According to a press release from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, Brown was found unresponsive in her cell at the Vigo County Jail on the morning of March 10th.

That statement also included a description of an extended process, including a refusal of admission by jail personnel on medical grounds and multiple visits to Union Hospital’s Regional Campus, for Brown to receive medical evaluations.

In response to these events Brown’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against, “the Vigo County Sheriffs Department, its officers, agents and contractors, and potentially other parties as yet undetermined that may be liable…”

The Probable Cause Affidavit (PCA) for the arrest states that ISP officer Brayden Stultz initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of South 6th and Oak for an expired license plate.

The occupants were identified as Jakita Brown (driver), Michael Lewis (front passenger), and an unidentified passenger in the back seat. Stultz then states that the smell of alcohol was detected, and after the arrival of a second ISP officer, Cameron Goodman, a field sobriety test and breathalyzer were conducted.

The PCA then states that Brown and Lewis were taken into custody, and that Brown was transported to the hospital, but it does not include the jail’s refusal to admit, nor does it include any time recordings after the initial traffic stop.

Terre Haute Vice News contacted ISP public information officer Matt Ames to request a statement from officer Stultz. Ames reported that Stultz had taken a new position and would not be available for comment.
