“This is the largest pre-need theft case ever in the state of Indiana, why are there no charges filed, why has Mr. Greiner not been arrested, and why is he not in jail?”

Those questions were asked by the Indiana Funeral and Cemetery Board during their August 6th, 2026 hearing to revoke the license of Terre Haute funeral director Gary Greiner.

According to testimony from the hearing, Greiner was administratively charged with 18 counts, including fraud and material deception, managing a funeral home without an active license, and professional incompetence.

The board also requested that the state examine the potential of Medicaid fraud, any fraud related to trustee burials, and an immediate investigation of former Greiner funeral home director Jennifer Gummere.

Delaney Walter, investigator for the Indiana State Attorney General’s office testified at the hearing regarding the initial inspection of the funeral home on January 21st, 2026, in which 79 cremated remains were discovered, dating back as far as 2013.

It was also discovered that the funeral home inappropriately handled at least 142 pre-need funeral arrangements totaling over $500,000 in missing funds, and that Greiner had been managing the funeral home despite a lapse in his license due to unpaid taxes.

Following that inspection and subsequent investigations, Greiner’s license was suspended on April 2nd, 2026 for 90 days. That suspension was then extended on June 4th, pending the revocation hearing in August.

The board encouraged any victims who are not able to receive restitution from Greiner Funeral Homes to file for recovery of payments plus interest from the state’s pre-need consumer protection fund.

Update: The Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office stated that they’ve been working with law enforcement on processing a large amount of evidence, and they expect charges to be filed in the next two weeks.

  4. Both of my parents were cremated there! One in 2016 and the other in 2020! It really makes me wonder if the ashes I received back are those of my parents! It’s bad enough trying to deal with the loss of a loved one but for anyone to be taken advantage of in such a way is absolutely unacceptable! Shame on you Mr. Greiner for your utter disregard for people in some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives! Disgusting!!!!!!
